Leigh’s Loving Legacy

On January 11, 2025, we lost an extraordinary woman, Leigh Director, whose life was a testament to resilience, love and unwavering dedication to help others. Leigh was a devoted wife, the proud mother of five beautiful children, a cherished friend and a passionate Legacy board member and advocate for organ, eye and tissue donor awareness.

Through her story, Leigh showed the world the profound impact of organ donation. She often reflected, “I have not only been able to live the ‘normal’ life I once dreamed of but I’ve been blessed to live it to the fullest.” Her journey inspired countless others to see donation as a legacy of hope, healing and life.

Leigh’s advocacy extended far beyond her own experiences. She championed the cause of organ donation with unmatched passion, sharing her story to encourage others to register as donors and bring light to those waiting for their second chance at life. She dedicated herself to her family, her work with The Whitman Family Foundation and her mission to make this world a better place!

Born with Cystic Fibrosis, Leigh faced challenges that could have seemed insurmountable. At just 14 years old, doctors told her that her only chance for survival was a multi-organ transplant. In December 1996, she became the first double lung and liver transplant recipient in the United States. Leigh described her life as “a gift I receive each and every day,” made possible by the grace of God and the selfless decision of her donor’s family.

Leigh’s passing is a powerful reminder of the importance of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor and the life-saving impact each person can have. Her unwavering courage and advocacy leave a legacy that will continue to inspire us all to raise awareness, take action, and work tirelessly to save lives in her honor.

Leigh once said, “By registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor, you take part in the mission to impact and save the lives of others, a gift that leaves a legacy.” Let us honor her by carrying forward that legacy with the same dedication, grace and love that defined her life.

Rest in peace, Leigh. Your light will never fade.
