Becoming a Donor

Louisiana has over 2.6 million people signed up on the secure and confidential Louisiana’s Organ Donor Registry database. These individuals registered their decision to possibly save a life by saying “yes” to being an organ, eye and tissue donor – 95% of those on the registry consent through the OMV.

The work we do with our partners, like the OMV, is vitally important because the need is so great. Yet, only about 59% of Louisianans are registered donors – too many rule themselves out. You’re never too old to register and your medical history doesn’t necessarily affect your eligibility to be a donor. Every registration is critical since less than 1% of people who die are able to save lives as an organ donor.

The OMV asks those customers receiving driver’s license or ID cards if they would like to join Louisiana’s Organ Donor Registry. OMV employees not only assist customers with signing up to become organ, eye, and tissue donors, but many of them are registered donors, and others are appreciative recipients. So, our partnership holds special meaning.

We do everything we can to honor the wishes of registered organ, eye and tissue donors. For families experiencing loss, it’s a comfort knowing their loved one’s wishes so they don’t have to wonder what their loved one’s choice would have been.
