What is a Donor Sabbath? It is a beautiful celebration of life! It is a time for faith leaders, donor families, transplant recipients, and donation and transplantation professionals to participate in services and programs to educate the public about registering as a donor. We encourage you to attend or host a Donor Sabbath event in your community! In the meantime, join us in praying for those in need of life-saving transplants. Bring the message to your congregation by:
-
- Including information in your church bulletin about registering to be an organ, eye and tissue donor
- Providing your faith leader with facts about donation and ask they share the message
- Placing registration forms, bookmarks or prayer cards in your church
- Requesting a speaker or plan a donor drive at your place of worship
Faith Outreach
Families facing the loss of a loved one often turn to their faith leader for their religion’s view on end-of-life decisions, including organ donation. When someone we know dies, it can call attention to the importance of the spiritual dimension of life. When faced with the decision of organ and tissue donation during the trauma of a loved one’s death, a person’s religion suddenly becomes very important. As the decision is being made, the question often arises, “What is my religion’s stance on donation?”
The fact is, all major religions view organ donation as an act of charity or make it clear that it is a decision to be left up to the individual or family.
The decision to become a donor is a personal one, and if you have questions, you should consult with your faith leader. Please don’t take your organs to heaven… Heaven knows we need them here!
Faith leaders are saving lives in our community!
As faith leaders, we are called to help dispel the myth that organ donation is “against my religion.” We should discuss the importance of giving the gift of LIFE and how easily the decision can be made by saying “yes” when getting your driver’s license or ID card.
With more than 100,000 men, women & children in the U.S. waiting for transplants, we must dispel misconceptions that often prevent individuals from saving lives. When loved ones are not registered as donors, their family members frequently feel guilt regardless of their decision. Sadly, thousands lose their lives each year while waiting for transplants. And organ donation is the greatest act of charity and love you can perform.
Donor Candlelight Vigil
Lighting Candles recognizing all organ, eye and tissue donors; deceased and living, to acknowledge their decision and honor them for their beautiful gift. We will pay special tribute with the lighting of candles, identifying what is personal to all who give of themselves. The significance of each candle lit will represent Giving, Peace, Love, Hope, Remembrance and Grief. Each candle lit represents Giving, Peace, Love, Hope, Remembrance and Grief. ALL community churches and faith leaders are invited to attend, with the hope you will educate your congregation about this life-saving message. This will be an interfaith gathering of clerics and donors. We will also livestream this beautiful celebration of LIFE.
